Peter Calandra

You may not know the name Peter Calandra, but chances are you’ve heard his music. The New York City-based composer and keyboard player has scored 40 films, written over 2000 compositions for television broadcast, including 37 theme packages, and performed as a musician in the Broadway productions of Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, The Phantom Of The Opera, The Lion King, and Little Shop Of Horrors.

Parallel to this, Calandra has released three albums of imaginative and lyrical instrumental music encompassing jazz, contemporary jazz, classical, and refined pop.

What's the best piece of advice you've been given?

Learn to play music in all keys. A very helpful skill that i am still working on!

What's the worst piece of advice you've been given?

Don't bother practicing because you'll never amount to anything anyway. Was told that by a really bad leader on a club date when i was in college.

What do you enjoy the most about making music?

What has the been your greatest success?

I don't have a 'greatest' success. Several highlights have been playing piano and conducting the original Off Broadway Production of "Little Shop Of Horrors". Playing the keyboard 1 book for the Broadway Production of "Miss Saigon" for 10 years. As a composer, scoring the 2011 feature film "RIse" and the 2013 ESPN Film "Pat XO". For TV Music composing many theme songs for the Comcast Sports Net.

How do you balance your career with your personal life?

One thing that has helped is that i do not tour as a musician. Having a stable living situation where you are not living on a tour bus really helps. It is one reason i changed my focus from playing piano full time to composing full time.

What's next for you?

I am currently working on a feature length documentary that will be in a permanent installation at a major library here in the USA. I can't say more about it than that. It will keep me busy till the beginning of March.
